Spring 2021

Contemporary Figurative Sculpture with Susan Luery

Picture
Working from a live model, participants will explore their own inspired interpretations of the figure.  Using “paper clay,” a wonderful product that works like clay and can be fired, participants will create a permanent work of art. This four-day workshop will sharpen your skills and inspire your imagination. Participants will have the opportunity to develop their own expressive possibilities, using the form of the live model as a jumping off point. The figures will be sculpted on a board using paper clay. Days one, two, three, and four will focus on refining and completing the figures.
Instructor: Susan Luery

Quilling: The Art of Paper Filigree with Jan Yoshioka

Picture
If you enjoy working with paper, or if you just want to try something new in 2021, join Jan in exploring this versatile and unique artform! Students will learn all the artistic ways that quilling can be used, and will learn all beginner and some intermediate techniques. Using thin strips of paper and metal tools, you'll learn how to roll and form the shapes that make up beautiful designs. Various projects will be offered, such as decorating a greeting card, making a unique pair of earrings, decorating a favorite photograph, or creating seasonal ornaments.
All levels are welcome. Students must possess manual dexterity and the ability to work in small detail. Quilling is simple to learn - it takes patience, but the results are amazing!
Please bring $20 cash to pay the instructor for a materials kit.

Color & Markmaking with Tara Will

Picture
Learn to use color and markmaking in pastel to express your voice! During this workshop, students will focus on understanding value, composition, color, and markmaking. Please bring several of your own images (please do not use any image that isn’t your own). We will look at these images and discuss what makes a great painting. To help each other understand what is working and not working in a painting, we will also constructively critique work (it’s not scary!). Please bring Sennelier La Carte paper - you may also bring whatever paper you typically work on, but there are techniques specific to this paper that will be used.

Fusing Argentium & Keum-boo with Marsha Levey-Blandy

Picture
In this workshop, we will use an ancient Korean gilding technique, Keum-boo, that applies thin sheets of gold (23.5k) to Argentium for a beautiful finish. This is the perfect way to achieve using gold on your work without the expense of solid gold. Fused instead of soldered, students will make a flat piece for a pendant or pair of earrings, and on the second day, will create a cuff out of Argentium. Students will learn how to apply Keum-boo on a curved surface and flat, using both a torch and burner. Lighthouse ArtCenter will order all gold materials to make it easy and affordable.
Students will need to bring $24 for the 23.5K yellow gold foil and their own Argentium.
All levels are welcome and will be successful! Those with more experience will be able to push the boundaries of their projects.
Instructor: Marsha Levey-Blandy
Studio 385-Studio J; Wednesday-Thursday, March 10-11, 12-3 pm

Simple Pictures are Best with Lon Brauer

Picture
As artists, we tend to be impatient. We want to get to the final product as fast as we can. But in doing so, we skip the basics and can easily fall into a hole of mediocrity at best, or frustration at worst. We all do it. Lon has built this workshop to address some of the most basic issues that are often overlooked in our zeal to get on with the fun of making paintings.
We each have our own way of doing things. Sometimes seeing how another artist works can get us out of our comfort zone and allow new growth. In this workshop, Lon will be showing how he approaches drawing and oil painting and how it works - and sometimes doesn’t work - for him. The journey is a work in progress.
Through simple exercises, demonstrations, discussion, and hands-on instruction, Lon hopes to give you some new ways of looking at plein air...and painting in general.
Consider bringing in some personal work that has problems to discuss one-on-one.
Our end goal is not to make art but rather to learn how to make art.  If we’re lucky, art will happen!

Basket Setting with Gustavo Hoefs

Picture
Learn how to fabricate a basket setting for a gemstone from silver wire. You will find out the tricks of the trade on bending and soldering wire to fit a round stone that you can't buy commercially-available wire settings for. Soldering skills are a must for this class. If you don’t know how to solder, you will not achieve the desired results of the project or goals set for the class. You will need an already functioning solder set up, equipped with a torch, at home. We will be working with hot metals, so 100% cotton jeans and closed cover leather shoes are mandatory.
Instructor: Gustavo Hoefs
Online (Students are welcome to sign up to use the ArtCenter Jewelry Studio and bring their own device for Zoom, plus headphones. Please email LisaJ@LighthouseArts.org if you plan to come in!)

Simplifying the Figure in the Landscape with Eli Cedrone

Picture
The basic principle of figure painting relies on well-designed shapes of light and dark, which allow for the description of beautiful form. We will separate two difficulties by first addressing drawing and design, and secondly developing color to its completion. This approach helps to unify your painting by relating the major masses in terms of color and value.
By creating a simple value plan, you'll learn how to break down the fundamental form of the figure into large shapes or masses. There will be instruction on how to mix clean color in the correct value and temperature in order to create the illusion of light on the figure. Eli will demonstrate and explain her methods throughout the day and work one-on-one with each student. The focus will be on achieving accurate drawing and correct values - two of the most crucial aspects of representational painting. Other topics to include: gesture, form, varying edges.
