Hugh O'Neill
Hugh O'Neill was born in the old port city of Belfast, Ireland and began drawing and painting at an early age. Today, O’Neill is considered one of Ireland’s greatest living landscape painters. O’Neill was accepted into the Honours Fine Arts Degree program at the University of Ulster in Belfast City. He also spent time in France, working around Nantes and Paris, Nice and Antibes. O’Neill follows the traditional school of European landscape masters of the 1900’s. He paints en plein air or from memory, never from photographs. He is a gifted draftsman with a deep understanding of color and tone. His European training and Irish roots blend together in his approach. O’Neill explains, “I am as figurative in my work as the viewer perceives me to be and as contemporary as new grass in an old soggy field. I define modernism as a frank expression of oneself.” The artist maintains working studios in Ireland (where he holds painting workshops) and in Florida.
