David Willson
David Willson was the right person in the right place at the right time when the Palm Beach Daily News was looking for a freelance editorial cartoonist early in 1992. He comes from Palm Beach pioneer stock. Since 1875, successive generations of his family have played key roles in shaping the town of Palm Beach, the city of West Palm Beach and Palm Beach County and all of that background has come in handy over the last 25 years as he has limned his weekly editorial cartoon.
Although the cartoons focus on local current events, Willson often sees things in a broader cultural and historical context, with ever a nod toward human foibles. He has been the recipient of multiple journalism awards for his cartooning from the Florida Press Club and the Florida Society of News Editors.
Willson’s career has also included numerous art direction, creative direction and editing positions for Palm Beach County area advertising agencies, professional associations and publishing companies. He has launched and redesigned several publications, authored numerous magazine articles and writes a weekly column for the Palm Beach Daily News entitled Cartoonistry.
